Deutschlandsemesterticket (EN)

Students at RWTH and FH Aachen have been using the Germany Semester Ticket since the summer semester 2024.

Costs

The Deutschlandsemesterticket costs 29.40 euros per month - the authorisation to travel in South Limburg costs an additional 5.91 euros per semester. This means you pay a total of 182.31 euros per semester.

Where Can I Commute?

Germany-wide and in the Dutch region of South Limburg.Trips to Belgium are also possible.

Take-Along

There is no take-along rule. You can only ride alone.

Ticket

The Deutschlandsemesterticket is currently only available as a chip card for most students. RWTH first-semester students in winter semester 24/25 will receive the ticket digitally in the naveo app.

Are you a first-year student at RWTH in the winter semester 2024/2025?

Then you will get your Deutschlandsemesterticket online via the naveo app

Your ticket will then be called ‘Deutschlandsemesterticket Online’. You will receive an email with your personal registration code to your RWTH email address in good time. If you enter the code in the naveo app, your Deutschlandsemesterticket Online will be available to you. You don't have a naveo account yet? Then it's best to wait until you have received the registration code before setting it up – otherwise you will have to use two different accounts.

How to register your Germany ticket in naveo: Instructions for the Germany Semester Ticket Online

Below you will find frequently asked questions about the Deutschlandsemesterticket Online. These are updated regularly.

You can find current information on the topic on the RWTH-AStA website.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Deutschlandsemesterticket Online

Here you can find information about the digital ticket in the naveo app

An exact date has not yet been set, but you will be able to activate your ticket in time for the start of the semester.

Once you have clicked on the link in the e-mail and entered your personalised link code in naveo, all you have to do is enter your date of birth. Then enter a user name and password. That's it. All other data will be transmitted and accepted by RWTH.

For security reasons, we recommend that you do not use the e-mail address for the user name, but a separate user name.

Use the linking code from the e-mail to create a second account on which your Deutschlandsemesterticket will be available. An automated linking of your subscription with an existing account is unfortunately not possible at the moment.

Have you already registered with naveo using your RWTH e-mail address? What to do in this case is still being clarified. Please contact the naveo support:

naveo hotline:
0241 1688-8000
Mon - Fri: 7.30 am to 9.00 pm
Sat, Sun, public holidays: 9.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

Not yet at the moment. For the time being, only first-time registrants for the winter semester 2024/2025 will receive a digital ticket. However, the general switch to the naveo ticket is planned for the turn of the year. Please be patient a little longer.

You pay for the ticket via your university's semester fee, so you do not need to enter any payment details in naveo.

No. The take-along rule does not apply with the Deutschlandsemesterticket. Only you can travel with your ticket. Children under the age of six are an exception.

You can log in with your naveo account on any device. Subscriptions such as the Deutschlandsemesterticket are stored in the app and do not need to be transferred by support.

The battery of your mobile phone must be sufficiently charged during the entire journey so that the ticket can be checked at any time. If you are unable to show a valid ticket during an inspection due to an empty battery, you will be travelling without a valid ticket and will have to pay a fee of 7.00 euros.

Then you must use the chip card for the time being. Only students enrolling at RWTH Aachen University for the first time will receive an online ticket.

Your registration in the app is not complete. Please proceed as follows:

Click on Tickets at the bottom of the app and then on the user symbol at the top right. Then click on the red bar ‘You are a guest user’ and then on ‘Log in’. Click on ‘Forgot your password?’.  You will receive a confirmation link by e-mail, which you must use to set a new password. The confirmation link is valid for 12 hours. Then log in to the app with your user name and password.

If you have any further questions, please contact the naveo hotline on 0241 1688-8000.

You Need to Update Your Chip Card to Be Mobile Throughout Germany

Have you been enrolled earlier than summer semester 2024 and do you already have a chip card with a semester ticket? Then you need to update your card immediately.

Are you enrolled since summer semester 2024?

Then you will automatically get the correct ticket via mail. You don't have to update it.

Where Can I Update My Chip Card?

At one of our ticket agencies or at a Deutsche Bahn ticket machine in the AVV area. You can find the ticket machines at DB stations and stops. We are currently working on a solution for our ASEAG ticket machines. You also have the option of having your chip card updated by DB employees at two counters in the DB Travel Centre at Cologne Central Station.

You can find the locations of all ticket machines and sales points here:

Frequently Asked Questions About the Deutschlandticket Semester

You Can Find the Answers Here.

FH Aachen and RWTH Aachen students can now update their card.

Until the start of the summer semester 2024, i.e. students at FH Aachen until 1 March and students at RWTH Aachen University until 1 April 2024.

You can update your chip card at all Deutsche Bahn ticket machines located at railway stations and stops in the AVV area. You can find an overview of the machines HERE on our list or you can search for machines HERE on the DB website.

You can also have your ticket updated at our ticket agencies. You can see where you can find our ticket agencies HERE.

You also have the option of having your chip card updated by DB employees at two counters in the DB Travel Centre at Cologne Central Station.

At the top of the page you will find a link to our video instructions. There we show you how to update your ticket at the ticket machine and at the ticket office.

Not necessarily. Technically, this is still possible after the start of the semester. So if you are sick or abroad, for example, you can update your chip card at any time.

However, if you are travelling on buses and trains without an updated chip card, you are formally travelling without a valid ticket. So please upload the new data as soon as possible.

No problem. You can simply update your ticket as soon as you are back in Germany. You can update your ticket at the ticket machine or at the ticket office at any time. Even after a semester or a year abroad.

Just get in touch with us. Write an email to semesterticket@aseag.de. We'll find a solution.

If you have not updated your chip card by the start of the semester and are still travelling with your chip card, you are travelling without a valid ticket. So please try to update your chip card in good time.

This is done in less than a minute. Links to video tutorials showing you how to update your map can be found at the top of this page.

No. You can also give someone else your chip card. We generally recommend that you go on an outing together during your lunch break to update your chip card. This will bring you closer together.

No, updating is free of charge everywhere. If a fee is charged, for example at an advance booking office, please contact us: semesterticket@aseag.de

When updating the semester ticket to the Germany semester ticket, RWTH Aachen University students may receive a message that the ticket has been valid since 4 February 2024. Regardless of this update date, Germany-wide mobility with the ticket is still only possible from the start of the summer semester – i.e. from 1 April 2024. You do not need to do anything else.

There are cases where only the Germany semester ticket is saved on the chip card after the update (also with the date 4 February 2024 – see one FAQ above) and the "AVV semester ticket" display has disappeared. Here, too, Germany-wide mobility with the ticket is only possible from the start of the summer semester. Until then, you will be mobile in NRW with this ticket up to and including 31 March 2024. You don't have to do anything else.

The chip cards are valid for a maximum of five years. They are therefore replaced regularly. This is the case for many cards in June 2024. If you are still authorised, you will automatically receive a new chip card around two weeks before your old card expires. It will be sent to you by post. So please make sure that your university knows your current address. At RWTH, for example, you can change your address in RWTHonline.

If you do not receive your new ticket on time, it may have been returned to us by post. In this case, you can collect your new ticket free of charge from the ASEAG customer centre.

The new chip cards do not need to be updated again at the ticket machine. The Germany semester ticket will be updated before it is sent by post.

Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

At the DB ticket machines at stations and stops, the Deutschlandsemesterticket is currently still called "Deutschlandticket Semesterticket-Upgrade" when it is updated. The correct product name "Deutschlandsemesterticket" will also appear here shortly. If you have already updated your chip card, you do not need to do anything else.

If you receive an error message on the machine display, please try a second time. It usually works then.

If there are still problems with the update, this may be because your chip card is defective, for example. If possible, please take a photo of the error message and contact our customer centre at Schumacherstraße 14 in person or send us an email to: semesterticket@aseag.de.

No. With the Deutschlandsemesterticket, you no longer have to take your ticket with you. Only you can travel with your ticket. Children under the age of six are an exception.

From the summer semester 2024, i.e. FH Aachen students from 1 March 2024 and RWTH Aachen University students from 1 April 2024 - even if you have already updated your chip card before the deadline.

The summer semester 2024 starts:

  • 1 March at the FH Aachen
  • 1 April at RWTH Aachen University

You continue to pay for the ticket via your university's semester fees.

If you start in the summer semester, we will send you a new chip card by post. You do not need to update this chip card.

Everything is fine. It is important that the correct ticket is stored on your chip card. This is the case if you update your chip card in good time or if you are sent a new card for the summer semester. We cannot and do not want to replace all existing chip cards. For reasons of sustainability alone, we have to live with the "NRW" label.

Nevertheless, it may happen that certain transport companies in Germany are unable to read your card. In this case, we have created a document that explains to ticket inspectors and conductors why your card looks different. Download it HERE. Carry it with you digitally or printed out when you are travelling throughout Germany.

The chip cards are valid for a maximum of five years. They are therefore replaced regularly. This is the case for many cards in June 2024. If you are still authorised, you will automatically receive a new chip card approximately two weeks before your old card expires. It will be sent to you by post. So please make sure that your university knows your current address. At RWTH, for example, you can change your address in RWTHonline. At the FH Aachen you change it in the FH Aachen Portal.

If you do not receive your new ticket on time, it may have been returned to us by post. In this case, you can collect your new ticket free of charge from the ASEAG customer centre.

Your address is not in Germany, the Netherlands or Belgium? Then unfortunately a new card will not be sent to you automatically. The card must then be collected from the ASEAG customer centre.

The new chip cards do not need to be updated again at the ticket machine. The Germany semester ticket will be updated before it is sent by post.
